RSC Porous Materials Group Bursary
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1. Bursaries will only be used to cover expenses associated with travel to an academic conference in the general area of porous materials. Bursaries will not be awarded if the recipient does not attend the meeting. We reserve the right to request evidence of conference attendance.
2. The only eligible costs are: economy / standard class travel; registration (conference dinners can be included in registration fees); accommodation. Public transport is expected where feasible, alternatives will be considered if a need is demonstrated (e.g. for accessibility requirements or public transport not available). We reserve the right to refuse reimbursement for unreasonable requests, e.g. lengthy taxi journeys where alternatives exist. Subsistence and other expenses are not eligible.
3. Bursaries can be awarded to: undergraduate students, postgraduate students (MSc or PhD), postdoctoral researchers, technical staff at any career stage, or independent early career academics (defined as those within five years of starting their first independent position).
4. Bursaries cannot be used to claim for expenses covered by another funding source. All items covered by the bursary must not be claimed for elsewhere.
5. No-one can be awarded more than one bursary. Applications received from previous recipients will be immediately rejected.
6. Bursaries will typically be limited to £500. In exceptional cases where significant travel is involved (including a main flight of over 4 hours in length), the committee will consider applications up to a value of £750.
7. All costs must be evidenced during the application with quotes or screenshots for requested costs. Do not apply for more than you require.
8. A letter of support is not required, but you may upload one if you wish.
9. The information provided in your application will be shared with members of the RSC Porous Materials Group committee for assessment. All applications will be assessed by the bursaries sub-committee of the RSC Porous Materials Interest Group, who reserve the right to prioritise applications based on their own selection criteria.
10. The following selection criteria will be used to prioritise applications which:
- Show the greatest benefit for the applicant.
- Come from members of the RSC Porous Materials Interest Group.
- Allow researchers to attend our own annual conference – UKPorMat.
- Come from those presenting a talk or a paper at any conference.
- Come from those in the later years of their PhD rather than earlier years.
- Come from applicants who have not attended a conference previously.
- Allow the largest number of bursaries to be distributed.
- Ensure bursaries are distributed across a broad subject scope.
- Ensure bursaries are distributed across a broad demographic of scientists.
11. The bursaries sub-committee reserve the right to award less than the total requested amount to maximise the number of applicants we can support.
12. The bursaries sub-committee reserve the right to reject applications on the grounds of eligibility, or if requested costs are excessive or not evidenced.
13. All recipients of a bursary are required to return a brief report to the bursaries sub-committee, within one month of the conference ending, explaining what the bursary has been used for and the benefits to the recipient. This will allow the Porous Materials Interest Group to complete mandatory reporting.
14. Recipients of a bursary may be asked to provide a photograph or quote about their bursary and conference experience for the Porous Materials Group website. This is not compulsory but would help us advertise our activities broadly.
15. The Royal Society of Chemistry Porous Materials Group will contact you regarding your application. None of the data you provide here will be used for marketing purposes.
16. Personal data processed in this form will be deleted six weeks after the closing date.
17. If you have any questions about the process, please contact the RSC Networks team at networks@rsc.org. For more information about how we handle your data, please see the Royal Society of Chemistry privacy statement at https://www.rsc.org/help-legal/legal/privacy/.
